Valuable Coverages — What You Need to Know
Business Interruption
Business interruption insurance protects your profit dollar when physical damage to your property causes an interruption of operations.
Some typical expense that can be covered by business interruption insurance include:
Normal payroll expenses
Overtime
The cost of transferring operations to another site, including rent
The cost of outside services
Lease payments on premises and equipment
Lost income as a result of your business interruption
Extended business income after your property is restored
Business interruption coverage is automatically included in all AAHA-recommended package policies.
Equipment
The equipment you purchase is an investment and hopefully it will earn income for you. This equipment can be accidentally damaged or destroyed by animals or even employees. Most insurance policies do not cover damage to your equipment caused by animals in your care. This exposure is covered by the AAHA-recommended policy. Coverage applies to the equipment on or off the premises.
Automotive Liability
If your employees use their vehicles on practice business, such as, to run errands or make house calls, hired/non-owned auto liability insurance is a must. You should verify that anyone driving on practice business has a valid license and insurance on the vehicle. As the employer, you may be held responsible for your employee’s auto accidents that occur while on practice business. It is important to note that hired/non-owned automobile liability protects the practice—not the employee.
Mechanical Breakdown
Mechanical breakdown coverage protects you from losses due to the accidental breakdown and resulting property damage from mechanical and electrical systems such as: heating and cooling, telephone, fax machines, copiers, and surgical and medical equipment. And because computers are often vital to the efficiency of veterinary practices, the AAHA-recommended package policy protects you in the event of mechanical breakdown, headcrash or impairment of electrical imaging in your computer system.
Umbrella Liability
This policy provides an additional layer of liability protection should the underlying limits of your general liability and auto policies be exhausted. For about 80 cents per day, you can have an additional million dollars of protection.
